THESE EVERYDAY HABITS CAUSE HAIR LOSS

THESE EVERYDAY HABITS CAUSE HAIR LOSS

We know more today than ever about the myriad of things that can cause distressing scalp conditions, hair thinning, hair loss, and sluggish hair growth.

It turns out; it’s not only genetics that plays a role - quite a few internal and external factors can cause serious mischief.

WHAT CAUSES POOR HAIR HEALTH?
A surprisingly long laundry list of everyday stuff can adversely affect your scalp and hair. These include:

  • Poor nutrition
  • Excessive heat styling
  • Chemical and colour treatments
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol
  • Stress
  • Allergens
  • Hormonal contraception
  • Hormone imbalance or changes
  • Several medical conditions
  • Some medications
  • Exposure to chemicals like chlorine

When your body is faced with any of the above, it responds by kicking off a series of changes that can interfere with the hair’s regular growth cycle. Basically, instead of your follicles remaining in the growth phase (also called the anagen phase), they shift into regression (catagen), which then leads to mass shedding aka the telogen phase.

Need a little more detail? It helps to think of your hair follicles as mini organs. (They’re not really, but entertain the analogy for a minute.) Like your other (actual) organs, your follicles are impacted by the health of the rest of your body.

In much the same way as the flu can affect seemingly unrelated parts of you - from your ears to your heart - hair production is altered by everything from your endocrine and metabolic systems to your gut health.

So it makes sense to take a more holistic approach rather than merely focusing on treating hair loss at the scalp.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?

Some bodies adapt well to stressors, and some don’t. (If yours doesn’t, hair loss can be one sign.) If that’s the case for you, you might benefit from extra nutritional support. As horrible as hair loss can be, most cases are temporary. By addressing the underlying issue (or issues!), you’ll likely see a turnaround with time and attention. Of course, if you suspect your hair loss is triggered by a medical condition or medication, please see your doctor.

The good news? According to hair growth science, for most people, the anagen (or growth) phase can last from up to two to seven years. Thus, it follows that keeping your follicles happy and in this phase can lessen hair loss.
